The Agilent Advisor WAN combines complete protocol analysis for WAN and ATM testing with a powerful and rugged personal computer -- all in a lightweight, easy-to-carry package that offers the best combination of price and performance in the industry. In addition, this platform can easily grow to perform LAN and Voice Quality Analysis. With the introduction of the J2300E with its faster processor and extra memory, users will experience a significant improvement in performance, particularly when running multiple applications simultaneously.

The Agilent Advisor WAN (J2300E) allows you to monitor all major WAN communication protocols from 50 bps to 155 Mbps: Packet over SONET/SDH, Frame Relay, ISDN, X.25, HDLC, SDLC, SNA, Sync/Async PPP, ATM-DXI and encapsulated LAN protocols running over the wide area network.

V-Series interfaces, such as RS-232C/V.24, RS-449/422/423, V.10/V.11 and V.35, are already built into the platform; for high speed V-Series (to 8.192 Mb/s) a plug-in module is also available. Slide-in modules add test capability for ISDN BRI and PRI, T1, J2, E1, E3, T3 (DS3), STM-1e/EC-3, ATM25 AND UTP155. Undercradles also add test capability for Ethernet, switched Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, FDDI and STM-4/OC-12 (622 Mbps ATM). In addition, the Advisor can be expanded for voice Quality Test through analog FXO and E&M interfaces.

ATM/WAN Testing Made Easy

    To install or troubleshoot an ATM or WAN link, it is necessary to test for many things: physical errors, equipment interoperability, ATM cell congestion, and even LAN traffic problems. The Agilent Advisor offers integrated ATM, WAN, and LAN protocol analysis capabilities, along with bit error ratio testing (BERT), stimulus/response measurements, and statistical analysis capability - everything required to get a good look at the physical layer, ATM/MAC layer, and all of the upper protocol layers. In addition, the Agilent Advisor can test ATM quality of service (QoS) with contract conformant traffic and can check live traffic for conformance to a traffic contract (policing). For Frame Relay, the Agilent Advisor can verify that Service Level Agreements are met. No matter what the traffic level, the Agilent Advisor will capture every cell or frame on full-duplex network connections. It monitors non-intrusively and decodes ATM or WAN data at full line rate. Further, it can simulate traffic from either direction within a connection. In addition, it can process previously captured data from its capture buffers or from a file for retransmission. The analyzer not only captures traffic when the network is working - it provides information when the network is broken - when it is needed the most.

The Agilent 622Vu Advisor extends the test capability of the Agilent Advisor to provide full rate ATM analysis at 622 Mbps. By simply attaching the 622Vu Advisor undercradle to the Agilent Advisor WAN or Agilent Advisor LAN-Fast Ethernet, network troubleshooters have test capabilities from 1.5 Mbps (DS1) to 622 Mbps (OC-12c/STM-4c) -- all under one handle.

The Agilent 622Vu Advisor can be used in either of two configurations: end-station mode or monitor-only mode. In end-station mode, the 622Vu Advisor is active as a terminal on one of two ports (user selectable); the other port provides a passive physical layer loopback function (with optical/electrical/optical regeneration). In monitor-only station mode, the Agilent 622Vu Advisor can be inserted into a bi-directional optical circuit providing passive through-mode monitoring.

The Agilent 622Vu Advisor is able to analyze two channels simultaneously. Capture buffers associated with each channel allow full rate (622Mpbs) capture of ATM traffic. The user can capture on VIP-VCI and can post-capture filter on VPI-VCI, on IP addressed in AAL-5 encapsulated PDUs, or on various PDU decodes. Captured traffic can be analyzed in post-capture mode to decode nearly 300 LAN encapsulations and view critical events and alarms.

In addition to protocol analysis capabilities, real-time auto-discover circuitry allows the 622Vu Advisor to find multiple virtual connections (VPI-VCIs) and gather per-VCC statistics and IP encapsulation, where appropriate.

The J3763A 622Vu undercradle requires the addition of the J3764A optical interface plug-in.

   Visibility on the health of the physical interface is often critical in determining the cause of network problems. Therefore, the Advisor tracks errors at the physical layer. Signal events are recorded on the display for both the line (network) side as well as the equipment (user) side. Events are time stamped and saved in the buffer and can be logged to disk. To alert you immediately to problems at the physical link, critical parameters appear at the bottom of all screens -- whether you are looking at line  status or other displays -- and these parameters are shown in red if a physical problem has occured. They include such events as loss of signal, loss of frame, loss of cell delineation and applicable parameters for the STM-1/OC-3, STM-1e/EC-3, UTP155, E3/T3, J2, and E1/T1 line interfaces currently supported by the Advisor.

   The Advisor monitors the network, captures data, and decodes it in real time. Data capture can be started manually, or automatically by setting a trigger. The analyzer can selectively capture data using its 12 hardware capture filters, so that the memory buffer contains just the information you want to see. The Advisor fully decodes  frames and cells and displays all fields in summary, detail, or hexadecimal format (Figure 5). In addition, being Microsoft Windows-based enables you to view different protocol decodes, vitals, statistics, and other displays simultaneously. Data can be printed, or stored to a file and retrieved for later analysis.
