Advantest Q8384 Optical Spectrum Analyzer

Rent me for $1000 a month

with option

  • Option 25 Calibration light source with EE-LED output

The Advantest Q8384 is a high-end optical spectrum analyzer using a new monochromator developed by ADVANTEST and featuring a high dynamic range and a high wavelength resolution. It offers the world's highest level of performance with a 10pm wavelength resolution and a 20pm wavelength accuracy in the 1.55µm band. This enables precise measurement and evaluation of wavelength characteristics. The Q8384 optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) is optimized to test devices used in DWDM applications, or any application where broad spectral range measurements are required.

Features

  • High-wavelength resolution of 10pm
  • High-wavelength precision of 20pm
  • Wide dynamic range 50dB (±0.1nm) and 60dB (±0.2nm)
  • Direct input of large signals: + 23dBm (200mW)
  • Measurement of NF noise indices of EDFAs
  • Thin film filters for triplexers

In DWDM optical communications, exacting wavelength measurements are required of the optical source. Evaluating these specifications requires an optical spectrum analyzer with enhanced resolution bandwidth and wavelength accuracy. To meet these stringent requirements, the Q8384 achieves 10 pm wavelength resolution, the best in the world and attains 20 pm wavelength accuracy in the 1550 nm band. This high performance makes it possible for the Q8384 to measure the oscillation wavelength characteristics of laser diodes accurately. DWDM optical communication systems also contain wavelength division multiplexed channels spaced at intervals as close as 50 GHz (0.4 nm). In this environment an optical spectrum analyzer with superior dynamic range is required to separate the optical signals and measure the noise figure (NF) of the optical amplifier. The Q8384 has a dynamic range as wide as 50 dB at 0.1 nm and 60 dB at 0.2 nm and therefore fulfills these requirements adequately. Equipped with automatic optical amplifier NF measurement and arithmetic facilities, the instrument allows the user to make measurements in a simple fashion. The Q8384 optionally has a built-in reference wavelength light source and an EE-LED (edge emitting LED). If calibrated with this reference light source, the instrument is assured to provide wavelength accuracy of 20 pm in the 1550 nm band. Using the EE-LED's broad-band light source, the Q8384 allows the user to conveniently measure and evaluate the transmission and loss characteristics of narrow-band optical filters.

  • 006 Calibrator

The Agilent 86145B is a portable optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) that is best suited for 50 GHz and wider WDM applications where accurate power and wavelength measurements are critical. This OSA has all the performance capabilities of its larger sibling, the Agilent 86142B, while having a smaller 12.8" x 16.8" footprint and weighing 31 lbs.

Features

  • Built-in test applications
  • 10 pm wavelength accuracy
  • Fast dual-sweep method
  • Covers S, C, and L wavelength bands
  • Extended WDM wavelength range

The 86146B benchtop OSA enables new test methods you may never have thought possible. One of the applications of the filter mode is to allow a single tightly spaced DWDM signal to be isolated. You can then quantitatively analyze in the time domain without losing any of the traditional OSA functionality you¿ve come to expect from Agilent. It is now possible to switch between parametric measurements in the physical domain to functional measurements in the time domain. The WDM application can sequentially or selectively drop WDM channels that require additional analysis. The 86146B provides the flexibility to drop a single DWDM channel as tight as 12.5 GHz spacing with fast-tuning speed, low-insertion loss, and highly repeatable wavelength accuracy. We¿ve also designed our built-in WDM application to work with the single-mode monochromator output path to simplify the task of pre-selecting a desired WDM channel for analysis. Another application of the filter mode is to measure time resolved chirp (TRC) and to compute dispersion penalty (DPC). Using the SMF feature of monochromator out as a preselector with a DCA, chirp measurements can be made on lasers.

Built-in applications take the uncertainty out of measurements for WDM systems, lasers, amplifiers, and passive components. These applications allow for fast, accurate, easy to use, and repeatable measurements of critical parameters. All of these applications can be added through a simple firmware upgrade.

The 8614xB series of optical spectrum analyzers provide fast, accurate, and comprehensive measurement capabilities for spectral analysis.

  • Full-featured SCPI commands for programming instruments over LAN

  • Display-off feature for making faster measurements

  • Remote file saving and printing for outputting measurement results

  • Filter mode for accurate and flexible measurements

  • Built-in applications for accelerating test times

· Direct absolute power readings for three wavelengths Each optical sensor is calibrated at three wavelengths (0.633/0.78/ 0.85 µm or 0.66/0.78/0.85 µm for short wavelengths, and 0.85/1.3/ 1.55 µm for long wavelengths). The absolute power is indicated automatically just by switching to the measured wavelength.

· Flexible measurements Two types of connections, a plug-in system (sensor incorporated into main frame), or a cord system (sensor connected using connecting cord), are possible so that measurement capabilities are flexible.

· Monitoring without cutting optical fiber The optical power in an optical fiber cable (ø0.25 mm, UV-coated fiber) can be measured by using the MA9722A Optical Power Sensor.

· Compatible with various connectors The ML9002A can be quickly connected to FC, D4. RUNGE, ST, DIN, DIAMOND, and SC connectors just by replacing the connector adaptor.

Optical return loss (ORL) along a fiber span can reduce fiber system performance and increase bit error rate by degrading transmitter stability. The BRT-320A is a rugged, hand-held dual-wavelength (1310 and 1550 nm) test set for measurement of reflected power in optical cabling. It is ideal for local and long-distance Telco, CATV, utility, broadband, and transmission equipment manufacturing applications. Other applications include fiber component and cable manufacturing. Features a large, backlit LCD, non-volatile memory for 300 stored readings, built-in NiCad batteries, 9V alkaline battery backup, and AC adapter/charger. The BRT-320A has a thermoelectrically cooled laser and low- drift photodetectors to ensure years of consistent measurements.

Back Reflection Test Set
  • 1300/1550 nm dual wavelength lasers as an option
  • Direct and isolated back reflection measurements
  • Back reflection readings can be stored; up to 300 memories

Optical Specifications

  • Source: Lasers
  • Wavelength: 1300 ± 15 / 1550 ± 15 nm depending upon options
  • Spectral Width: 5/5 nm
  • Range: -8 to -70 dB
  • Resolution: ±.05 dB
  • Power Output: -6/-6 dBm

EXFO¿s BRT-320A is a field-ready return loss test set offered in five configurations: 1310 nm, 1550 nm or 1625 nm (single-wavelength), as well as 1310/1550 nm or 1550/1625 nm (dual-wavelength). All come equipped with rapidly stabilizing TEC lasers and low-drift photodetectors to ensure constant optical return loss (ORL) measurements year after year.

Built-In User-Friendliness
Use the BRT-320A to read backreflection from 0 dB to -70 dB and easily store up to 300 readings in a non-volatile memory. ORL readings appear directly on the large, backlit LCD. An ORL zero function accounts for incidental backreflections before the point of measurement and complies with Bellcore optical continuous wave reflectometer (OCWR) requirements. In User Calibration mode, you can calibrate the unit to a known reflection.

Reveal Return Loss Problems
Many digital and analog fiber systems require ORL characterization. ORL along a fiber span is a combination of Rayleigh scattering and Fresnel reflections. Together, these phenomena can reduce fiber system performance and increase bit error rate (BER) by degrading transmitter stability. The BRT-320A measures cumulative link return loss and individual component reflectance to reveal potential ORL problems before they seriously affect your applications.

Versatile
The BRT-320A is ideal for local and long-distance Telco, CATV, utility, broadband and transmission equipment manufacturing applications.

Exceptional Performance in a Modular Package

With a dynamic range of 0 to -80 dB, the IQ-3200 brings you top performance, whether for measuring the reflectance of components typically showing extremely low backreflection, or for performing measurements beyond known reflection generators (e.g., when testing multiple components along a fiber connection).

  • Accuracy of ± 0.35 dB
  • Linearity of ± 0.015 dB
  • Spectral range of 1250 to 1630 nm (at 1 nm)
  • Resolution of 0.001 dB
  • Low polarization sensitivity
  • Stable reflection reference

Why Measure Backreflection?

Backreflection contributes to overall power loss, degrades laser performance and interferes with voice and video signal processing. In order to maintain system and component integrity, measuring and controlling backreflection is therefore a must. Two terms are used to quantify backreflection: reflectance and ORL. Reflectance typically designates the reflection at a single interface or reflection site (e.g., connector or splice). It is specific to a single system component. ORL is made up of the combined reflections of a fiber-optic system or subsystem as measured from a specific point. It includes the reflectance of each system component, along with reflections generated along the fiber itself. EXFO¿s IQ-3200 Return Loss Meter measures both reflectance and ORL, and is an invaluable instrument for system or component design, manufacturing, testing and troubleshooting.

Meeting the Demanding Needs of Laboratory and Manufacturing Environments The IQ Solution

EXFO¿s IQ-3200 Return Loss Meter is one of the many modules housed in the flexible, versatile IQ platform. Combine it with the IQ-2100 ORL Light Source in the IQ-203 Optical Test System, and benefit from a first-class connector test station. Change the ORL source for the IQ-2300 ASE Broadband Source or the IQ-2600 Tunable Laser Source, and perform return loss measurements over the WDM wavelength range. The IQ-3200 can also be an integral part of larger, more complex, integrated measurement systems found in research and development environments.

Testing Tip

When performing return loss measurements, connector cleanliness is key. Connectors contaminated with dirt, dust, fingerprints, etc. will cause erroneous readings. EXFO recommends connectors be thoroughly cleaned with isopropyl alcohol to ensure measurement accuracy.

    New Fluke FT300 Fiber Microscope

This convenient, easy-to-use instrument brings fiber inspection into the 21st century by providing a comprehensive view of even hard-to-reach connectors. Inspecting fiber optic terminations in patch panels, hardware devices, test equipment and cable assemblies can be a real challenge without the right tool. Maybe you can inspect connectors at the end of a fiber link with a traditional fiber inspection microscope. But how do you get to installed connectors and access critical fiber connectors on a hardware device?

The Fluke Networks FT300 FiberInspector¿ puts the quick and safe solution for fiber testing every termination in today's high-bandwidth systems right before your eyes. Simply insert the probe and inspect installed fiber connectors through the bulkhead adapters without accessing the backside of the patch panels. This portable video microscope works 10 times faster than traditional scopes. Viewing instant, sharp images saves valuable time inspecting installed fiber in patch panels while reducing contamination and signal loss in hardware devices. This Network SuperVision Solution¿ also lets you inspect live fiber safely without harming your eyes.

Dirt, dust and other contaminants are the enemy of high-speed data transmission over optical fiber. With today's network applications requiring more bandwidth and loss budgets being tighter than ever before, keeping all optical connections clean and free of contaminants is critical to ensure network operation. So even hard-to-reach fiber connections must be inspected. The rugged FiberInspector gives you superior vision by enabling you to inspect all types of installed fiber terminations in hardware devices and patch panels. Instead of removing each individual fiber, you can insert the video probe and inspect the fiber while it's still in place. This is the only practical way to determine if connectors on most hardware devices are clean and in good condition when disassembly is not a realistic option.

FiberInspector features a high-contrast handheld display unit and a small, lightweight probe that contains a long-life LED light source and CCD video camera. The probe holds itself in place for hands-free operation. Just mate the adapter tip with the connector. Then view crisp, clear images of microscopic debris and end-face damage through high-magnification optics projected on the LCD. The video display allows you to look at a fiber end-face without looking into the fiber, eliminating all chance of harmful laser light reaching your eye.

Includes FT330 Fiber Display, FT350 Fiber Probe, probe adapter tips (ST, SC, FC and universal patch cord tip) and ac adapter/battery charger in a hard carrying case. The 16.4-ounce display unit is 3.5" x 2.3" x 8.5" while the 1.4-ounce probe is 1.3" x 1.3" x 4.3" (length varies depending on adapter tip). One-year warranty.

Compare me to the Exfo BRT-320A  Same specifications at half the price. Why pay more?

We are big fans of the Exfo BRT-320A. We have sold hundreds and they have a well deserved reputation. However we are also fans of incredible value. The New Owl 4 Dual Wavelength Optical Return Loss Meter measures backreflection just as well and sells for the price of a used Exfo BRT-320A. Why not save the money and get a full factory warranty?

The Fiber OWL 4 ORL is a highly accurate hand-held optical return loss meter, designed to measure the return loss of singlemode fiber networks. Additionally, it can be used for a wide range of functions from simple optical power and loss measurements to standards-based link certification of singlemode fibers. Its built-in Link Wizard walks the user through a series of steps, prompting the user to pick the parameters of their link under test, and sets an ORL reference based on these parameters. This reference is used as a point of reference by which a test will PASS or FAIL against the specified ORL level. When used with an OWL WaveSource singlemode fiber optic light source, the Fiber OWL 4 ORL provides fiber optic professionals with automatic wavelength switching so that the meter and source are always set to the same wavelength, and automatic dual-wavelength storage cuts down on testing time and human error. Up to 1000 fiber measurements can be stored in memory, and can be downloaded to a PC using our free OWL Reporter software via the supplied serial cable. OWL Reporter displays fiber tests in either a summary or detail view, and prints out professional certification reports that can be passed along to customers as proof of link certification. Data can also be saved to hard disk for later retrieval. The Fiber OWL 4 ORL is enclosed in high-impact plastic, and a protective rubber boot provides additional shock protection. Its large backlit display is easy to read, and the 18-key pad allows for easy data entry. It can be used in many test environments, including LAN, MAN, WAN, FTTH, Telco, CATV, Manufacturing, and Laboratory.

Fiber installations are increasingly required to have fiber length measurements to comply with bid requirements. Rather than purchase expensive certification test sets, the BOLT can be added to an installer¿s existing fiber test kit for a fraction of the cost.

BOLT stands for Beaming Optical Length Tester, and offers a unique, low-cost alternative for users who need to measure the length of optical fibers. Fiber installations are increasingly required to have fiber length measurements to comply with bid requirements. Rather than purchase certification test sets that can cost thousands of dollars, the BOLT-NL can be added to an installer¿s existing fiber test kit. These length testers use a ¿round-robin¿ method of measuring fiber length. This is accomplished by looping back two fibers at one end of the fiber run with a patch cord. The round trip time that the light takes to travel through both fibers is converted to length in kilometers, then divided by two to show the length of the fiber cable. There is no need to measure the length of all the fibers; the length measurement can be applied to all fibers in the cable. This method of length testing provides accurate measurements, and saves time and money. Measuring fiber by the jacket is an accepted method of measurement; however, there are many scenarios where this may not be valid. Length markings may be hard to reach if they are already terminated in a patch panel. Fiber links may also go through multiple cross-connects or have splices in the middle, thereby making jacket markings invalid. Optical measurement of fiber produces accurate results without the need for jacket markings. Optical measurement also saves time by eliminating the need to estimate the length of the fiber run with a measuring wheel. This method is especially troublesome and inaccurate in networks that traverse walls, are in a star topology, or contain riser cables. The BOLT uses a 1310nm infrared laser that can measure fiber links of up to 25 kilometers, is accurate to within ±2.5 meters, and pulsing mode allows for easy fiber location when used with a fiber identifier.

NOTE: To avoid confusion, the BOLT-NL is NOT an OTDR-like device.

THE BOLT DOES NOT TEST LENGTH TO A FAULT. IT IS ONLY CAPABLE OF MEASURING THE LENGTH OF A FIBER LOOP.

New Owl PCVFL (Precision Coupled Visual Fault Locator)

PCVFL (Precision Coupled Visual Fault Locator) is a light-weight, hand-held tool used to quickly troubleshoot faults in the continuity of both single mode and multi-mode fibers, especially at fiber launch points or in OTDR dead zones.  A high intensity visible red laser beam is precision-coupled into a optical fiber; breaks and micro-bends in the fiber deflect the red light into the fiber jacket, producing a red glow at the point of the fault.

    Features
    • Visual Range up to 5 km (3.1 miles)

    • Optical Output -2dBm red laser

    • Optical Transmission Continuous Wave

    • Pulsed at 6 Hz w/12.5% duty cycle

    • Dimensions 4.94 x 2.75 x 1.28 in

    • Weight 6 ounces

    • CW Mode - 15 hours use on one 9v battery

    • Pulsed Mode - 120 hours use on one 9v battery

    • Low battery indicator

    • Handheld /Lightweight

Typical battery life in CW mode is 15 hours, and the short 12.5% duty cycle in pulsed mode extends the battery life to 120 hours of continuous use.

The PCVFL ships standard with ST connectors

Additionally, the PCVFL can be used as an end-to-end visual fiber identifier, which is useful for locating fibers terminated in poorly labeled or unlabeled fiber patch panels. A single switch is used to operate the PCVFL, toggling the unit between OFF, CW (continuous wave), and Pulsed modes

Almost all fiber optic experts own a VFL similar to VOLT but they don't get the extra benefit length testing features of VOLT !

VOLT functions as any good quality Visual Fault Locator (VFL). However, with the same price range as other VFL's VOLT has the added benefit of doubling as a LOOPING length tester!  Many cabling warranties and bids are requiring meter based length tests to prove length of links.

VOLT uses 2 fibers and patch cables to establish a length test accurate to +/- 7 feet !  VOLT's VFL functions up to 5 Kilometers (3.1 Miles). Loop length testing functions up to 1.5 Kilometers.

As far as VFL function, VOLT holds its own against the best in the industry. As with any quality VFL VOLT is a precision coupled laser diode! VOLT is not made as a cheap laser light pen is designed! Rather, a multi-million dollar semiconductor machine is used in the manufacture of a special precision coupled micro sized ball lens. This precision coupling allows VOLT to couple maximum red laser light into the tiny connector orifice of fiber optic links up to 5 Kilometers (3.1 Miles) of distance!

Most quality VFL's will go this distance. However at extreme distances like this the "fault finding" capability is reduced to fiber identification only. At shorter "LAN" distances high energy red laser light can be used to see breaks in fiber behind patch panels (hence the name visual fault finder). But be assured VOLT holds its own against any other brand name VFL!

Fiber installations are increasingly required to have fiber length measurements to comply with bid requirements. Rather than purchase expensive certification test sets, the VOLT can be added to an installer¿s existing fiber test kit for a fraction of the cost.

Optical length testers save time by eliminating the need to measure fiber by the cable jacket. Fiber links may also go through multiple cross-connects or have splices in the middle, thereby making jacket markings invalid. Optical measurement of fiber produces accurate results without the need for jacket markings.

Many fiber optic network bids and Requests For Quote (RFQ) are citing cabling standards to specify the set of guidelines (such as fiber length) that the network installer must follow during the network installation. Adherence to such standards is meant to ensure the quality of the installation and guarantee that the network will perform as it was designed. The process of testing a network installation to ensure its adherence to specified standards is called certification, and often requires hardcopy documentation as proof of adherence to standards.

The WaveTester / WaveSource Quad Test Kit contains the tools necessary for certifying fiber optic links against a myriad of popular cabling standards in multimode and singlemode networks. The WaveTester optical power meter is multimode and singlemode ready, and can store reference values for all wavelengths used for optical loss measurements. Up to 100 fiber runs may be stored, and serially downloaded to a PC for report generation using our OWL Reporter software.

The WaveSource Quad is a combined multimode / singlemode light source. Its quad-wavelength outputs (850 & 1300nm for multimode and 1310 & 1550 nm for singlemode) are temperature-stabilized for accurate measurements

    Features

New Owl WaveTester Series Optical Power Meters

The WaveTester is one of the world's most economical and accurate fiber optic link certification power meters delivering professional performance and a complete feature set for optical loss testing in both multimode and/or single-mode networks.

The WaveTester is offered in two models.  The WTUFX is N.I.S.T. Traceable at four commonly used industry standard wavelengths (850, 1300, 1310, and 1550).  This makes it an ideal choice for both multimode and single-mode testing.

The WTUIFX is also N.I.S.T. Traceable at the standard wavelengths, and also comes factory calibrated at 1625nm.

Each model of the WaveTester can store reference values for all of its calibrated wavelengths, and displays optical power as an absolute value in dBm or relative to a user set "zero" reference in dB.  Stored data points contain this reference information, and when data is downloaded into our free OWL Reporter software, the data can be certified using one of many popular cabling standards.  OWL Reporter can also print professional-looking certification reports as proof to customers of a job well done.  OWL Reporter data can also be saved to hard disk for later retrieval.

Other standard features include a backlit, easy-to-read LCD display and a 2.5mm Universal detector port that is compatible with FC, ST, SC, DIN, and any other 2.5 mm ferrule connectors!  No need to maintain expensive adapter caps!  The WaveTester is protected from shock and droppage by an attractive rugged rubber boot.
