Transmission Impairments The Transmission Impairments capability permits phase jitter, weighted noise, noise-with-tone, signal-to-noise-with-tone ratio, and single level impulse noise measurements. The HP 3586A's capability to make these transmission impairment measurements at both FDM voice channel and carrier frequencies is unique. Frequency and Amplitude Precision The Agilent/HP 3336 A/B provides frequency resolution of one microhertz (.000001 Hz) up to 100 kHz and one millihertz (.001 Hz) to 20.9 MHz. Level accuracy is ±.15 dB at full output over the full frequency range with ±.12 dB optional. Harmonic levels are more than 60 dB down up to 1 MHz and more than 50 dB down up to 20.9 MHz, performance not previously available in a synthesizer. FDM Testing The flexible output section allows different connectors to be provided either by option or special request. Frequency entry is accomplished by keyboard or analog control for manual tuning or frequency stepping of any digit. The Amplitude Blanking feature allows testing of operational FDM systems without disturbing adjacent channels while the frequency is changed. The output is blanked to less than ¿85 dBm until the next desired frequency is reached. General Purpose Features The Agilent/HP 3336 A/B Synthesizer provides wide band sweep capability¿sweep the full frequency range (or as little as two microhertz), log or linear, single or continuous. Single phase lock loop design means the sweep is phase continuous and you can modulate with AM to 50 kHz or PM to 5 kHz. Ten storage registers can be used to keep different test settings available for repetitive test. All necessary func- tions on the HP 3336 A/B can be remotely programmed by HP-IB control for automatic testing. |

5790A-03 Wideband AC Measurement
Automated AC measurement with precision that is easy to use
The Fluke 5790A is a complete automated ac measurement standard designed for the
most demanding calibration applications. It combines the accuracy you would
expect from a thermal transfer standard with the ease-of-use of a digital
multimeter. Absolute ac voltage measurement uncertainties are as low as ±24 ppm
(one year, 23oC ±5oC). The 5790A is designed to meet the complete ac voltage and
wideband verification requirements of the Fluke 5700A, 5500A and other
calibrators, amplifiers like the 5725A and 5205A, and transfer standards and ac
voltmeters. The Fluke
5790A covers an alternating voltage range of 700 µV to 1000V, and a frequency
range of 10 Hz to 1 MHz. A wideband voltage option extends frequency range to 30
MHz to meet the calibration requirements of Fluke 5700A, 5720A and 5100 Series
Wideband Options. The 5790A is
also compatible with Fluke A40 and A40A Current Shunts, which permit you to make
ac/dc current transfer measurements up to 20A.
The 5790A may be used alone or as a transfer standard with an external dc
source. In either case the normally tedious switching and calculations are
performed automatically by the 5790A, and the resulting ac/dc difference is
displayed directly on the easy-to-read vacuum fluorescent display. Versatility that keeps you productive
When you first power up the 5790A, diagnostics verify the instrument's
integrity. The variety of input connections
allows you to use the one that best suits your application. There are four sets
of input terminals on the 5790A, two Type-N connectors and two sets of five-way
binding posts. One Type-N and one set of binding posts are dedicated to the ac
measurement and transfer modes. AC or dc voltages may be applied to either input
connection over the 5790's full range, allowing you to perform automated ac/dc
transfer measurements. The 5790A determines automatically whether the applied
voltage is ac or dc. The second Type-N input connection supports the optional
wideband mode, and the second set of binding posts are designed for Fluke A40
Series Current Shunts. The input connection is selected with the touch of a key
on the 5790A front panel. An LED indicates which selection is active. |

Reference standard accuracy and stability, in one
functionally versatile, easy to use solution
The Fluke 8508A is an 8.5-digit
resolution instrument designed specifically for metrologists. With superior
accuracy and stability over a wide range of measurements the 8508A is designed
to serve as a versatile precision measurement tool for calibration laboratories
that must meet increasingly stringent measurement uncertainty analysis
requirements demanded by ISO 17025, as well as the need for increased
productivity.
With the introduction of the 8508A,
Fluke has created a new product category the reference multimeter specifically
for metrology applications. The 8508A Reference Multimeter draws upon decades of
Fluke expertise.
The 8508A features 8.5 digit resolution, exceptional linearity
and extraordinarily low noise and stability, producing what are arguably the
most accurate measurements to be had from any commercially available product
today. That's why stability must be treated with the same priority as accuracy.
The 8508A demonstrates 365 day stability as low as 2.7 ppm, with a 24 hour
stability of 0.5 ppm, ensuring that confidence in today's measurement can be the
same as it was yesterday or last year.
To achieve this frequently requires a complex array of
instruments. The Fluke 8508A provides an extraordinarily broad range of
measurement capability. This means you can undertake a wider range of
applications, and perform most of your measurement requirements with a single
instrument.
Voltage measurement
With DC and AC ranges from 200 mV to
1 kV, the 8508A covers all your voltage measurement needs. Full 8.5 digit
resolution is available on all ranges to provide resolution down to 1 nV.
Bandwidth for AC measurements extends to 1 MHz. Excellent linearity, coupled
with Ratio measurement capability, means that the 8508A can replace Kelvin
Varley dividers and AC/DC voltage transfer standards.
Current measurements
The 8508A features a remarkable new
current measurement system. For the first time, resistance at the input is
virtually zero. This means that measurements can be much less invasive.
Resistance measurement
With ranges from 2 ohms to 20 Gigaohms and resolution as low as
10 nanaohms, the 8508A can truly be described as the ultimate resistance
measurement system.

Keithley 2000-Scan Scanner Card
Keithley 2000-Scan Scanner Card
Rent me for $100 a month
Keithley has designed three plug-in scanner cards
for use with Model 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2010 DMMs. Simply by inserting the
appropriate card in the option slot on the DMM's back panel, users can create
a multipoint test and measurement system that's well suited to applications
involving up to ten measurement points. Combining scan and measurement
capabilities in a single instrument reduces the need for extra equipment,
eliminates complexities of triggering, timing, and processing issues, and helps
reduce test time significantly. Also, since the scanners were designed
specifically to work with these DMM's, measurement integrity is assured. For
larger ATE applications, the DMM's can be easily combined with Keithley's 7000
Series switch matrices and cards for high-speed, high accuracy scanning and
measurement.
Model 2000-SCAN Scanner Card

Keithley 2001 High-Performance 7-1/2-Digit DMM
Keithley 2001
High-Performance 7-1/2-Digit DMM
Rent me for $300 a month
Superior measurement speed and integrity
In addition to the wide range of measurement functions and
capabilities common to all Series 2000 DMMs, the Keithley Model 2001 has many
other advantages for test system builders. While other DMMs may claim to offer
71⁄2-digit resolution, they typically must average multiple readings to achieve
their specified resolution, which slows the reading rate significantly. In
contrast, the Keithley Model 2001¿s true 71⁄2-digit resolution is based on a
28-bit A-to-D converter, so no averaging is needed to discern smaller changes.
This high resolution also provides greater dynamic range, so it¿s possible to
measure from 1µV to 20V on a single range and avoid range-shift errors.
Unique measurement capabilities
Unlike the Model 2000 or 2010, the Model 2001 offers the ability
to make peak spikes measurements without the need for a separate oscilloscope.
Its internal peak detector can catch 1µs spikes, such as power supply spikes and
transients, AC line power surges, and short-duration drop outs on components, as
well as up to 1MHz for repetitive signals. The Model 2001 can automatically
display and store the highest value, or display the maximum and minimum values
of spikes. Similarly, no oscilloscope is required to determine if the crest
factor¿the ratio of peak value to rms values¿of an AC signal is acceptable to
ensure measurement accuracy, because the Model 2001 measures AC crest factor
directly. While some DMMs will calculate average AC from the RMS value, these
calculations apply only to sine wave inputs. With the Model 2001, it¿s easy to
measure AC peak value, average, and true rms directly to characterize the signal
completely. This capability is ideal for AC circuit design or test, and to
verifying test voltages specified only in averages.
Measurement Functions
- DCV
- ACV (peak, avg. and rms)
- AC+DCV (peak, avg. and
rms)
- DCI
- AC+DCI (peak, avg. and rms)
- ACI (peak, avg.
and rms)
- 2WΩ
- 4WΩ
- Frequency
- Period
- dB, dBm
- Crest factor measurements
- Peak spikes (high and low)
- Time stamp
- DC in-circuit current
- Temperature (TCs and RTDs)
- Lead resistance

Keithley 236 Source Measurement Unit
Keithly 236 Source
Measurement Unit
Rent me for $300 a month
The Keithley 236, SourceMeasure Units (SMU) is a fully
programmable instrument, capable of sourcing and measuring voltage or current
simultaneously. These systems are really four instruments in one: voltage
source, current source, voltage measure, and current measure.
Applications
These instruments address a wide variety of
applications, including the characterization of semiconductor devices and the
measurement of leakage currents or insulation resistance. They are
particularly useful as source and measuring instruments in automated test
equipment (ATE).

from 100fA to 100mA. It can also measure voltage from 10µV to 110V and
current from 10fA to 100mA.
Selectable Sweeps of Voltage and Current
The 236 can be programmed to perform source measurements as a
function of a stepped voltage or current. Voltage and current can be swept
linearly, logarithmically, or pulsed. The START, STOP, STEP method of setting
sweep parameters allows operators to become proficient at using the instrument
very quickly. Sweep parameters may be appended (APPEND key) to obtain more
complex test sequences.
Features four
instruments in one (voltage source, voltage measure, current source, current
measure)
- 10fA, 10µV measurement sensitivity
- Standard and custom sweep capability including pulse
- 1000 source/measurements per second
- Four quadrant source operation
- Internal 1000 reading memory
What is an electrometer?
Essentially, an electrometer is a highly refined digital
multimeter (DMM). Electrometers can be used for virtually any measurement task
that a conventional DMM can and offer the advantages of very high input
resistance when used as voltmeters, and ultralow current sensitivity with low
voltage burden when used as ammeters. Electrometers are superior to DMMs by
three to eight orders of magnitude in these respects. That makes them the
instruments of choice for measuring voltages with high source impedance or
currents with low source impedance (i.e., signals from nonideal sources).
Electrometers can also measure charge directly.

The tightly coupled nature
of a SourceMeter instrument provides many advantages over separate instruments.
For example, it provides faster test times by reducing GPIB traffic and
simplifies the remote programming interface. It also protects the device under
test from damage due to accidental overloads, thermal runaway, etc. Both the
current and voltage source are programmable with readback to help maximize
device measurement integrity. If the readback reaches a programmed compliance
limit, then the source is clamped at the limit, providing fault protection.
Keithley's SourceMeter
family is designed specifically for test applications that demand tightly
coupled sourcing and measurement. All SourceMeter models provide precision
voltage and current sourcing as well as measurement capabilities. Each
SourceMeter instrument
is both a highly stable DC power source and a true instrument-grade 51⁄2-digit
multimeter. The power source characteristics include low noise, precision, and
readback. The multimeter capabilities include high repeatability and low noise.
The result is a compact, single-channel, DC parametric tester. In operation,
these instruments can act as a voltage source, a current source, a voltage
meter, a current meter, and an ohmmeter. Manufacturers of components and modules
for the communications, semiconductor, computer, automotive, and medical
industries will find the SourceMeter instruments invaluable for a wide range of
characterization and production test applications.
Advantages of a Tightly Integrated
Instrument
By linking source and
measurement circuitry in a single unit, these instruments offer a variety of
advantages over systems configured with separate source and measurement
instruments. For example, they minimize the time required for test station
development, setup, and maintenance, while lowering the overall cost of system
ownership. They simplify the test process itself by eliminating many of the
complex synchronization and connection issues associated with using multiple
instruments. And, their compact half-rack size conserves precious
real estate in the test rack or bench. |

Keithley 428 Current Amplifier with IEEE-488
Keithley 428 Current Amplifier with IEEE-488 Rent me for $400 a month The Model 428-PROG Programmable Current Amplifier converts fast, small currents to a voltage, which can be easily digitized or displayed by an oscilloscope, waveform analyzer, or data acquisition system. It uses a sophisticated ¿feedback current¿ circuit to achieve both fast rise times and sub-picoamp noise. The gain of the Model 428-PROG is adjustable in decade increments from 103V/A to 1011V/A, with selectable rise times from 2ìs to 300ms. The Model 428-PROG offers fast response at low current levels, which is unmatched by either electrometers or picoammeters. The nine current amplification ranges allow the greatest flexibility in making speed/noise tradeoffs. The Model 428-PROG can be used with any of Keithley¿s data acquisition boards to implement a very cost-effective, low current measurement system with wide bandwidth and fast response. The Model 428-PROG incorporates a second order Bessel-function filter that minimizes noise without increasing rise time on high-gain ranges. This can be defeated in situations where 6dB/octave roll-off is desired, as in control loops of scanning tunneling electron microscopes. Input and output connections to the Model 428-PROG are made with BNC connectors. INPUT HI is connected to a programmable ±5V supply, which permits suitable bias voltages to be applied to devices-under-test or current collectors. This eliminates the need for a separate bias supply. For applications where voltage offset errors exist, the ZERO CHECK and OFFSET functions can be used, thereby maintaining maximum instrument accuracy. Current suppression is also available up to 5mA, useful for suppressing background currents, such as dark currents. The Model 428-PROG as Preamplifier to an Oscilloscope The Model 428-PROG can be connected to an oscilloscope or waveform digitizer to display very low currents in real time. ApplicationsThe Model 428-PROG satisfies a broad range of applications in research and device labs due to its cost-effective ability to amplify fast, low currents. A few of these applications include:
Biochemistry Measurements

Conductance Technology
Conductance describes the ability of a battery to conduct current. It is a
measurement of the plate surface available in a battery for chemical reaction,
which determines how much power the battery can supply. High relative
conductance is a reliable indication of a healthy battery, while conductance
declines as the battery deteriorates. Years of laboratory and field test data
have determined that battery conductance is an indicator of battery state-of
health showing a linear correlation to a battery's timed-discharge capacity test
result. If conductance can be measured, discharge capacity can be predicted,
giving a reliable predictor of battery end-of life. Other testing alternatives
like voltage and specific gravity testing are not predictive. Timed discharge
testing is very time-consuming and expensive, and impedance testing does not
correlate directly and linearly with discharge capacity. Thus, conductance
testing is a very effective and economical battery management tool.

Minolta CA-100 Color Analyzer
Minolta CA-100 Color Analyzer
Rent me for $300 a month
The CA-100 comes with a sensing probe external to the device and has been
a standard of the CRT manufacturing industry since 1990.
Communication with the computer is via an RS-232C cable (CA-100) or a USB
cable (CA-100 Plus)
Reference instrument for white-and color balancing on CRT
displays The worldwide reference unit CA-100, the successor to the legendary TV
color analyzer II, is characterized by its ease of use. The very lightweight
tristimulous receptor head is simply held in front of the television or monitor
and the measurement values appear immediately on the large display. A rubber lip
on the receptor head minimizes the effects of ambient light. The measurement
values can be displayed as luminance (cd/m² or ftl) with standard color values (xy)
or color temperature (T, äuv) or RGB values. A programmable LED display shows
additionally the deviation from a reference value using an analogue display. The
special highlight of the CA-100 is the display of the RGB values, obtained via
an optional analyzer card. A patented algorithm determines the necessary
conversion calculation from standard color values to RGB values for a measured
reference monitor, which allows a very simple white balance. At many service
facilities for major monitor producers, the CA-100 is even used in the control
circuit together with proprietary software to enable fully automatic white
balance. The unit can be ordered with the customer's choice of a 2m or 5m cable
for the receptor head. The CA-100 can save information about 11 reference
monitors including their alphanumeric designations. With an optional expansion
card the memory can be increased to hold up to 100 references. In addition, up
to 5 receptor heads can be attached to enable the online measurement of entire
image tubes. Besides the RS-232C interface, an optional GP-IB board can be used.
Of course, a V-Sync. input allows the synchronization of the CA-100 with the
image reproduction. PAL, NTSC, and universal synchronization are permanently
pre-programmed. User calibration of the instruments is also possible. When used
with the spectroradiometer CS-1000 and the CS-S2w software, multiple CA models
can be quickly and easily synchronized with each other and with the same
reference monitor

Quadtech 1865 Digital Megaohmmeter
Quadtech 1865 Digital Megaohmmeter
Rent me for $200 a month
Precision Measurements The 1865 provides resistance
measurement capability from 1kΩ to 100TΩ (test voltage dependent) with a basic
accuracy of 0.5%. To meet test requirements for a wide range of devices, the
test voltage is fully programmable up to 1000V DC. Sensing the proper resistance
measurement range is done automatically, thus eliminating setup errors; and in
order to eliminate lead or fixture errors, the operator can easily initiate an
automatic zeroing routine of test leads.
Pass/Fail Testing
Measured results are automatically compared to an
operator programmed limit for pass/fail testing. Pass/Fail indicator lights or a
pass/fail output from the instrument's I/O interface provide a clear indication
of the measured results.
Program and Data Storage
Test setup conditions and measured results can be stored in
instrument memory or on 3 1/2" disk when using the extended program storage
option.
Automated Testing
For automated system applications, the instrument
includes an I/O interface connection with remote start and pass/fail outputs. An
optional IEEE-488 interface is also available which enables the 1865 to be used
under computer control.
Current Display Mode
Besides a readout of insulation resistance in ohms, the
operator can select a display mode for reading the measured current directly.
Safety Features
The 1865 provides safety features such as current limiting, a
warning indicator when high voltage is active, and safety interlock, all for
protection of the operator.
Component Test Fixture
An accessory fixture is available for use with the 1865
which accommodates a variety of component types, including radial, axial and
chip components. It's shielded case reduces electrical noise and interference
and includes a cover interlock switch and remote start for maximum operator
safety.

Rod L Instruments Model M25 Ground and Bond Tester
Rod-L Instruments Model M25 Ground and Bond
Tester
Rent me for $100 a month
The Rod-L M25 is a 25 amp
rated Ground Continuity Test Set. It allows testing of the ground system of a
device under test to the rated test current. This insures that the ground and
bond system will protect the operator during a catastrophic failure.
A ground bond test applies a higher ac current to
the ground connection. This test simulates the fault which may occur within a
product by applying 25 A or higher at 60 Hz to the mains ground connection and
any exposed metal on the product. A ground bond test checks the integrity of the
connection and its ability to sustain high current. Most standards require that
the resistance from power line ground to the conductive surface on the product
does not exceed 0.1.
- Performs
ground continuity tests in full compliance with BSI, VDE and IEC
- Test
time is adjustable from 1 second to 90 seconds
- Measures
AC resistance from Chassis of Device Under Test (DUT) to power-cord
ground lead
- Measures 0 to 0.15 ohm
- Audible
and visual alarms identify faulty ground connections
- Hipot
interface enables interconnecting to any ROD-L Hipot Test
Instrument to form an automatic test system
- AC power
source supplies 25, 30m 35 Amps (user specified) at Å 2.5 volts
- The
Ground Continuity Test Instrument can be interconnected with any ROD-L
Hipot Test Instrument to operate as a fully automatic system. One
connection for DUT, and one start button to press
- Front
panel receptacle is rated to 8000 VAC
- Front
panel receptacle prevents director operator exposure to high voltage
during test
